Memory #14

Memory #14:"I wasn't meant to be a fugitive!" [Note: About receiving kindness ↔ Episode 2x02] (Trivial Neutral)

[Won in Game #141]

What he remembered/learned:

This memory is basically Zuko and Iroh becoming fugitives. Zuko is frustrated because he's not used to that lifestyle and he wants what he lost back very badly, while Iroh seems to take it more easily and spends time getting poisoned with a plant he thought it could be used to prepare a very rare tea. So they need help. However, they are enemies of the Earth Kingdom so if they're discovered they'll be killed and fugitives from the Fire Nation so they're found they'll be turned over to Azula . . . and wisely, Zuko is all "Earth Kingdom it is."

They arrive at a small village! Iroh gets treatment and healed from the poison by a kind girl. Zuko is a terrible liar when asked for their names and is the one that comes up with Li and Mushi. Zuko declines the girl's invitation to dinner, but Iroh makes him accept. During dinner, the girl talks about her father being taken away years ago by the Fire Nation and Zuko is pinged and is obviously affected. When asked if his father is fighting in the war, Zuko says yes which isn't technically a lie. He looks conflicted and unhappy during the whole thing.

THEN IT GETS WORSE. Because Zuko goes outside after dinner to think, the girl joins him and tells him that she understands, that the Fire Nation has hurt him and tries to touch his scar. Zuko stops her without saying anything and she says it's okay, that they hurt her, too, and she shows him ugly scars on her leg. It makes a huge impact on Zuko in canon because he has to face the consequences of the war from the other side of things, something he never had to deal with before in such a way.

SO IT'S TIME TO LEAVE. Iroh is super polite and makes Zuko say thank you to the girl and her mom. The girl tells Zuko that there's hope because the Avatar's returned, to which Zuko just goes all "I KNOW :|." TO TOP ALL THAT, Zuko steals the uh . . . horse-thing of that family and when Iroh tries to talk him out of it with a "these people just showed you great kindness" Zuko goes "they're about to show us a little more kindness." Iroh just looks down when Zuko offers him a hand and both of them leave.

As a note: Zuko was terrible at fishing at first and his hair is . . . well, not there at all.

What this means:

There's a lot of guilt coming from this memory but there's also a high feeling of it being necessary? Especially the part at the end, but it won't change that Zuko is going to feel bad about it. It's not a terrible memory in canon, but here will mostly show him his mistakes and a bit more of what his life was like before.

. . . And I guess he gets to remember he preferred to risk death than to get turned over to Azula. Oh, he'll be less likely to let other people touch his scars, but the exception to this is most of Ruby and those are close to him.
